First day of internship
Woke up early (6am PST), got ready and ate breakfast then had to wait for my cousin to help his kids get ready for school and he had to drive me and we got to the office around 9:30. One of my little cousins had a huge tantrum over her shoes so it took an extra long time getting them all ready to go.
As we were driving to work, my cousin asked me if I had brought my laptop, which I hadn’t because nobody told me I needed to so from that moment on I had a sinking feeling about the day and I felt so sick. Luckily, however, when we got there, it wasn’t a big deal because they had a desktop with a wireless keyboard and mouse (which needed to be tracked down for me) so it all worked out. But from the second I got there I felt so incompetent and like I was almost a hassle and in the way (but I was assured that that wasn’t the case and it was only my first day anyway).
I shared a work space with another girl who had clearly been working there a while but I cannot for the life of me remember her name. I had a feeling she didn’t like me much anyway though because I literally sat around a lot of the day. At one point I was asked to go down the street to pick up some food for some of the girls in the office and they were paying separately and once I got there, I was really worried that the orders were wrong and that I had done something wrong but when I got back to work, there were no complaints. I actually really liked being able to go out and do something because it made me feel useful. Plus one of the assistants made a food run to a different place around the same time and I got a really good caesar salad. But before that I was so hungry I thought I might pass out but obviously I didn’t want to complain.
I was there a total of 9 hours and for a good portion of the day, I was on Pinterest for the company and checking out blogs and design websites. It was actually really fun for a while but I have to be added to their Pinterest account so I wasn’t able to actually pin anything to the boards until that happened so after a while it got a little boring because I didn’t want to get too off subject especially when there was another girl sitting 2 feet away from me.
One of the really cool things I got to do however was prepare the Look Book for a benefit concert we have coming up this week. This meant that I had to take a list of all the performers/presenters/hosts/etc. and find the most recent picture I could of them and add it to a page with their name and title so that security and escorts knew who they were/what they looked like. This sounds really simple but there were a few people on there who’s pictures were near impossible to find plus it had to be in a certain format (almost yearbook style) and order. Some of these people included: Steve-O, Moby, and Billy Idol. I also had to highlight the schedules for each person and organize them.
Later on in the day, people started leaving (including the girl I shared a desk with) and I had no idea what to do because I had driven there with my cousin and I hadn’t seen him all day and I had absolutely no clue what time I had to be there until. Around 6:30, my cousin’s assistant comes in and says that whenever I’m ready to leave, he’s picked up my rental car for me and I can just head out. I felt bad jumping at the chance to leave even though I was exhausted so I waited around a few more minutes before telling him I was ready. I got my stuff and he walked me outside and asked me if I knew my way back to the house and I said I would be able to figure it out but luckily he gave me a brief summary otherwise I would have been very lost. It turns out, the rental car is actually really nice and luckily I brought a cable to plug my iPod in.
When I got home, my 3 year old cousin came running up to me and gave me a huge hug which made everything better. My cousin’s wife’s parents were over as well and her mom ended up making a quick dinner for the young girls and I.
I just need to never not bring my laptop ever again.
